The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) produced, during the first quarter of 2022, i.e. between January and March of the current year, 4.2 million megawatts of electrical energy.

This is reported by the Central Bank of Congo (BCC) in its compendium of statistical information on the volume of production in various sectors in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to these data from the BCC, last year, the production of electrical energy was also established at 4.2 million MW. This means that the production of electrical energy in the Democratic Republic of Congo has not changed.

For the whole of 2021, the production of electricity in the DRC has been estimated at 13.1 million megawatts, underlines this document from the Central Bank of Congo.

To date, the Democratic Republic of Congo has a huge energy deficit, thus impacting the production of local industries.

According to a diagnosis carried out by the Mwangaza collective, the energy deficit of the city of Kinshasa, the country’s capital, is around 850 megawatts against an estimated demand of around 1,300 megawatts.

Despite its gigantic Inga hydroelectric dam, the Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the countries with the lowest electrification rate.

Less than 10% of the Congolese population has access to electricity, 35% in urban areas (50% in Kinshasa) and less than 1% in rural areas.
