In an effort to enhance the well-being and safety of artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM) in Mongolia, the planetGOLD Mongolia project joined forces with the Emergency Management Division (EMD) of Mandal soum, Selenge province, Mongolia, for a comprehensive two-day training program on August 29 and 30, 2023.
The training aimed to equip ASM miners with essential knowledge in operational health and safety, ASM sector legislation, risk mitigation, and rescue operations.
Day One: Building a Foundation
The first day of training saw a multi-faceted approach to equipping miners with the necessary tools for safe mining practices. The Police Unit provided valuable insights into relevant legislation governing the ASM sector. Meanwhile, the General Hospital offered crucial first-aid training, arming miners with life-saving skills.
Furthermore, the Search and Rescue Unit played a pivotal role by sharing vital information about operational health and safety, rescue operations, and disaster prevention techniques.
The project also contributed by shedding light on the adverse effects of mercury on both human health and the environment, emphasizing the importance of responsible mining practices.
Day Two: Practical Training in the Field
On the second day of training, participants ventured to Noyt mountain, where EMD rescuers conducted hands-on instruction in rescue operations.
This practical training enabled miners to apply their newfound knowledge in real-world scenarios, ensuring they are well-prepared to respond effectively in case of emergencies.
Empowering ASM Miners for a Safer Future
In total, 23 ASM miners attended this invaluable training session, gaining insights and skills that are essential for their personal safety and the sustainability of their operations.
By providing ASM miners with comprehensive training in health, safety, and rescue operations, initiatives like the planetGOLD Mongolia project contribute to creating a safer and more sustainable future for these vital contributors to Mongolia’s mining sector.
